SHELTER X HEMINGWAY DESIGN

Live project, Third Year (2019)

Brief

Working together with Hemingway Design and the charity Shelter,  I redesigned an existing Shelter store in Preston. The project consisted of creating a concept, a story, a uniqueness to the store through design elements, while staying practical and listening to what the store manager wanted to achieve, in order to make it contemporary and appealing for all generations, but also staying true to the shelter identity.

Concept

Inspired by the production and the journey of furnitures, this scheme aims to educate people on how furniture is made and what it takes to build or fix them by an upcycling workshop in the store.

The workshop offers a service which involves customers in designing their second hand items chosen from the store, with the help of an online system that shows available stock, repurposing options and materials.

This concept will make the target audience broader by focusing on people aged between 20-45, by introducing technology, interactive design and allowing for a change in furniture design.

By this, the store will not look like a charity shop anymore, because of displaying the upcycled furniture, making it possible to be appealing for a lot more customers.

As one of the main focus was flexibility, the design includes a removable and customisable shelf system. The steel frame structure acts as a base for the rack, which can either be used as hangers for clothes or by putting a timber base on the top it turns into a shelf. This can be fully flexible as the racks can be placed anywhere on the frame and by this utilising space the best according to stock and what needs to be displayed.
